Scavenger Hunt
Digital Photography Elizabeth Herndon Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: This art was captured to compare and contrast the differences between taking photos with a standard phone-camera and a DSLR camera. The four images show the difference between how texture is captured on the two different cameras as well as how a scene is captured. This particular piece is of a teacher sitting at his desk in his classroom. Medium: The materials were the computer in the room, the desk, the chair, and the teacher. Project Goal: The goal of this project was for me to understand and capture the differences between a phone camera and a DSLR camera as well as the capabilities each camera has in capturing images. Evaluation: I thought this project allowed me to grow as a photographer by understanding the differences between the camera on my phone versus my actual DSLR camera. I learned a lot about how color, texture, and value are picked up by different kinds of camera, as well as different things that are emphasized in each camera. I was also able to see consistency in my use of proportion and balance with these photos. |
Shutter Speed
Digital Photography Elizabeth Herndon Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: These photos were taken of my photography classmate, Anna Lehrer, jumping in the air in the field house hallway. Medium: The project medium was comprised of my subject/model, as well as concrete bricks and tile flooring. Project Goal: The concept and goal of this assignment was to better understand how shutter speed affects photos and how changing it can drastically change your photos. Evaluation: This project taught me a lot about how value is presented in photography, as well as how shutter speed can affect color and shape. Adjusting shutter speed can also capture movement in varying ways, and it can emphasize different things and capture pattern in unique ways. |
ISO
Digital Photography Elizabeth Herndon Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: These photos were taken of a metal and string bracelet that I purchased while on vacation in the Cayman Islands. Medium: The bracelet is made of metal and string, and is sitting in the palm of my hand. Project Goal: The goal of this project was to experiment with using different ISO settings on the camera in conjunction with different shutter speeds. We also experimented with taking photos indoors and outdoors. Evaluation: I was really pleased with the way that these photos came out in this project. I really admires the way that I was able to capture color, line, and value in these photos by changing ISO settings. I also saw improvement in my ability to balance my photos and to show emphasis and pattern in my work. |
Question Photography
Digital Photography Elizabeth Herndon Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: This photo was taken of a carnation emerging from snow and ice into a field of grass. Medium: The materials in this photo were snow/ice, a carnation, and grass. Project Goal: The goal of this project was to choose a word and ask a question about the word, and then to capture a photo that essentially answers the question. My question was "What is vulnerable" and I think my photo answers the question well because the flower is vulnerable by being subjected to the cold of the snow and ice, but it attempts to emerge toward the grass. Evaluation: I was really proud of my creative abilities with this photo, as I often find myself struggling to find uniqueness in my photography. I really enjoy the way I was able to capture shape, value, and color in this piece, particularly with the bright red shades in the carnation, as well as emphasis (especially on the flower) , proportion between the flower and the background, and variety with the collective photo. |

Food Photography
Digital Photography Elizabeth Herndon Mrs. Gollan Subject Matter: These photos were taken of ice cream, a cupcake, and donuts. Medium: An ice cream cone dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, sitting on a wood table in front of trees, a vanilla cupcake with frosting, and two donuts dipped in sprinkles. Project Goal: The objective of these photos was to learn how photographers manipulate food in different areas to make them look especially appealing to potential customers. Evaluation: I had a lot of fun with this project (as I love food) and especially found the creation of the magazine cover to challenge me in a new way. As I have grown in the challenge of diversifying my photos and keeping them original, coming up with examples of headlines that would be marketable and flow with my cover photograph was an especially unique challenge as I had to craft ideas and words to match my photo. I found myself expanding in my capture of color, texture, and space, as well as emphasis and proportion. |
